Ordering Information

A girl and her mother enjoy doing
things together—they garden and paint,
bake and bike. Yet all the while the independent
girl is cooking up a way to make this a special
day for them both.

Companion book to PAPÁ AND ME which was recognized as—

  • Pura Belpré Honor Book
  • ALA Notable Children's Book

"A typical, yet special, day in the life of a girl and her mother. The first-person point of view and smooth integration of informal Spanish terms and phrases provide a comfortable intimacy with the characters, and the vibrant magic realism of the full-page spreads includes elements of street art. Together, words and pictures invite young audiences inside a comforting circle of familial love where every day is Mother's Day." —Booklist

"A day together in this sensitive story about autonomy and togetherness. The spirited speaker insists on doing just about everything by herself ("Sola, sola," she tells Mamá). But Mamá is always close by. Gutierrez's dynamic collages have a powerful sense of movement, while aura like outlines surrounding the pair vibrate with energy and accentuate the vitality of their bond." —Publishers Weekly

Story behind the story

My own mother helped me find paints and encouraged me to do artwork and more, independently as does the girl in the story. Yet my mother always let me know she was there for me. I have had the good fortune to see great mothers at work in a number of generations and in many ways, and watch as fantastic kids develop. May you enjoy your family!
